Le Bois du Moustoir

Welcome to the Bois du Moustoir, a green setting in Saint-Évarzec, between Quimper and Concarneau, in the heart of the Breton Riviera.

Le Bois du Moustoir a natural immersion

This 15-hectare wood, accessible to all, is an invitation to stroll, escape and discover. Whether you’re a family walker, nature lover or history buff, you’ll love the ecological richness and peaceful atmosphere of this natural area.

A nature walk through century-old trees

The Bois du Moustoir is first and foremost a living forest, typical of southern Brittany, where oak, beech, holly, ash and chestnut trees grow side by side. Lush vegetation that changes with the seasons. The natural humidity of the site, combined with the undulating terrain, sometimes gives the impression of a tropical forest: moss-covered trunks, ferns, wood hyacinths and fragons create an enchanting landscape.

Meet the woodland animals

Silence… open your eyes and ears wide! The Bois du Moustoir is home to a rich and discreet fauna. During the day, red squirrels, roe deer, foxes and badgers can be seen roaming unseen. The air is alive with the songs of passerines and the flight of woodpeckers, spotted woodpeckers, jays and buzzards… And as night falls, it’s the turn of the tawny owls and barn owls to make their voices heard.

On the ground, life teems beneath the leaves: kites, wood crickets, spiders, snails… These little inhabitants play an essential role in the balance of the forest ecosystem.

Did you know?

The Pectin Fir, although very present, poses an ecological challenge: an invasive species, it requires careful management to preserve local biodiversity.

The Etang du Moustoir: a wetland refuge to be preserved

Created under Napoleon to power a mill that no longer exists, the Moustoir pond has become a habitat for many species. Amphibians, ducks, kingfishers and emblematic plants such as royal fern and panicle sedge can all be found here. Anglers can fish here in accordance with local regulations (compulsory licence, max 6 trout/day, one line per person).

A heritage steeped in history… and legend

The Bois du Moustoir is crossed by the ancient Roman road linking Quimper to Concarneau, now the D783. Its name may well come from the Manoir du Moustoir, whose majestic entrance is marked by a 900-metre avenue of hundred-year-old beech trees. Dating from the 13th century, this Gothic manor house is said to have been a former commandery of the Knights Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem.

Now privately owned, it now houses a charming hotel. The driveway, meanwhile, remains open to visitors and plays a crucial ecological role: a veritable biodiversity corridor, it is home to birds, insects and small mammals.

Our advice to preserve this environment

  • Keep to the marked paths to protect fragile plants.
  • Don’t leave any rubbish behind. Remember to take it with you if there is no rubbish bin nearby.
  • Keep your dog on a lead and pick up after it.
  • No picking! Every plant plays a role in the ecosystem.
  • Camping, bivouacs and wood fires are strictly prohibited.
  • Do not move dead wood: it is home to a host of useful species.
  • Walk or cycle instead: soft means of transport are welcome.
